The Belvidere Central Invite was the most competitive we've seen it since we started attending the invite in 2010. Batavia Rotolo was 2nd in state for both the boys and girls last season and Lake Forest Deer Path was the 2013 state champions for girls cross country last year. In addition, the girl's individual state cross country champions from the 2A and 3A classes were running in the girls varsity race. Our Foxes did a great job competing against some tough teams. There is a synopsis of the four races below as well as a list of the personal records set by our team.
Girls Open Race
Roni Bruck and Samantha Moreno took turns in the lead during the open race along with three runners from Batavia Rotolo. In the end, Roni ended up in 3rd with a time of 14:12 and Sam was in 5th with a 14:17. Katie Straznickas was the 3rd runner for the team and earned a ribbon for her 23rd-place finish with a time of 15:40. The other runners in the top 7 were Tori Cavey (32nd, 15:57), Alex Badus (36th, 16:02), Maddie Russelburg (39th, 16:07), and Ashley Navarro (62nd, 16:47).
Boys Open Race
Team scores weren't kept for the boys open race, but our boy's teams depth showed in this race. Our team would have scored 27 points while the lowest possible score in cross country is 15. Cole Bruck held 2nd place nearly the entire race to finish in 12:43. Peyton Tiseth had a great race to finish 3rd in 12:55 and Tyler Jensen finished 5th in 13:12. Nick Gerakaris finished 8th with a time of 13:24 and Matt Megazzini finished the team's scoring in 9th with a time of 13:28. Rounding out the top 7 were Rick Undesser in 13th with a time of 13:36 and Kyle DiVerde in 15th with a time of 13:43. Evan Bender (18th, 13:49) and Ernie Rowoldt (19th, 13:51) also earned ribbons for their top-25 races.
Girls Varsity Race
Olivia Borowiak toed the line against last year's 2A and 3A cross country state champions and held her own by finishing 3rd in a team record 11:58, only two second behind Lauren Garruques of Lake Forest. Colleen O'Connor (8th, 12:41), Emily Eberhart (12th, 12:59), Victoria Crawford (13th, 13:03), and Dani Evans (25th, 13:28) all finished in medal-winning position, which meant all of the team's scorers earned medals. Unfortunately, Batavia did the same thing to win with 39 points to our 59 points. Losing to last year's state runner-up and beating last year's state champions is definitely a performance to be proud of, though.
Boys Varsity Race
This boys team showed incredible depth at New Lenox last week, and they showed it again with a 52 second split between our first and seventh runners. Alex Loos led the way for the team and finished 5th with a time of 11:30, which set our team record for the course. Jake Carlson finished in 6th with a time of 11:43, while Austin Hunter set a 7th grade boys record with a time of 11:57 in 10th place. Our top 7 all finished with medals, which included Hunter Benesh in 20th with a time of 12:19, Ben Tholen in 21st with a time of 12:20, Brett Rhodes in 23rd with a time of 12:21, and Bryan Corrigan in 24th with a time of 12:22. The boys also finished second to Rotolo with a score of 62 points to Rotolo's 41.
