Summer Track Meets
June 15, 2011
Coach Draper posted a list of a number of track meets on the high school team's website. While you may not want to participate in all of the meets it may be a good idea to try one out since you can run in some events that aren't typically held for middle school athletes.
A meet that is close by that you may be interested in is the Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships held in Plainfield from June 24 to June 26. You can go to USA Track & Field website for more information, but if you are interested in some unique distance races there are a few you should consider:
Steeplechase: Ask Coach Hoolie about this since he did it in college, but it's pretty much a distance race with hurdles and obstacles you have to jump over. The distance for the T&F Championships isn't listed, but it is usually less than 2 miles.
4x800m Relay: This relay isn't run at the middle school level, but it's a great distance relay and one that Yorkville has had a lot of success with. The girls 4x800 won State this year and the boys came in 2nd. You'd obviously need 4 runners for this event.
1500m Run: This race is just under a mile, and is considered the premiere middle-distance track event. This is a distance you won't run in middle school or high school so it could be fun.
3000m Run: This race is just under 2 miles and is longer than anything you would run in middle school track. Your age group may not have as many runners in this event so if you want to win something this may be the race to try.
If you plan on running any of the races this summer please let Coach Miller know so he can look for your results.
