Keeping In Shape
October 22, 2009
Hopefully most of our runners have taken the last two weeks to relax and take some time off from running. If you haven't taken any time off it is a good idea to take at least a week off so you can recover from the tough cross country season.
Once you've recovered from cross country you may be looking for a way to stay in shape until track starts. With most sports you can take a few months off and come back with only a little bit of rust, but with running taking a few months off can nearly eliminate all the hard work you put in. For this reason our runners who want to help our chances for State next season should be doing some running between cross country and track. There are a few ways you can do this.
The best way to do it is to actually brave the cold and run outside. This is easiest to do if you have a group to run with so if you are interested contact Coach Miller before the end of October so he can help you get together and give you an idea of what you should be doing. Coaches cannot coach cross country after October 31 so make sure you get in touch with Coach Miller before then. We won't be able to help you with running until track season starts in March so that is a long gap where you will be working out on your own. Even if you are in a winter sport you may want to do some running since some sports won't keep you in as good of shape as cross country. I've heard Brody Vester and Mason Brant are both still running and I'm sure some others are as well.
If you aren't a fan of running in the cold you could get a membership at a local health club. The Yorkville Rec Center is one option and they have a track so it may be your best option. There are also YMCAs in Plano and Oswego that are cheaper. The Oswego YMCA is new so I haven't been there, but they do have free membership for students under 18. I don't know if there is a residence requirement but it is worth checking out. Let me know if anyone knows of any other good places in the area or has other ideas to keep in shape. Have a great off-season everyone, and thanks for making the cross country season so successful and fun!
