Our goal of improving as a team every year has become harder to accomplish as we've reached the point where we are competing for a state trophy every year. We still have room to grow, though, and in our second year at the Parkside Invite we showed quite a bit of improvement. Last year we earned two total individual medals in the varsity races. This year we earned seven. Last year we came home with a single second place trophy. This year we came home with a third place trophy and a first place trophy. With teams from the 1A, 2A, and 3A divisions of the IESA there was a good mix of teams, many of which we won't see again this season. The state meet will be the next time we see most of the teams that we encounter again this year.
Varsity Girls
Helena Kleronomos once again led the way for our girls team. Last year she finished in 8th place in the varsity race and this year she set our 8th grade girls record at the Parkside Invite by finishing in 4th place with a time of 11:55. She battled with two girls from Parkside throughout the race but was unable to pass them at the end. Hailey Simmons ran her best race of the year to finish in 8th place with a time of 12:08, only nine seconds off the time she ran at State last year. Sara Klemm ran a great race to finish in 13th place with a time of 12:22. Ana Penland was by far the most improved runner in the varsity race. Ana ran a P.R. of 12:45 to claim a medal for 23rd place. Nikki Vergara just missed the medals, but broke 13 minutes to finish in 26th place with a time of 12:49. Brooke O'Carroll and Jinnaea Richardson worked together and finished in 43rd and 44th with times of 13:01 and 13:03. The girls won the race by a wide margin with 74 points. Second place Dunlap had a score that was nearly double with 143 points. All seven girls ran P.R.'s in the race.
Varsity Boys
The boys may not have met their lofty expectations with their third place finish, but they ran a great race and could not be faulted for losing to a team in Chatham Glenwood that was running on all cylinders. We will see them again at State for another chance. Ivan Westcott set our eighth grade boys record at the Parkside Invite with his 10th place finish in 11:10, which was 19 seconds faster than he ran last year on the course and 18 places better. Cade Grimaldi continues to improve by leaps and bounds and almost beat Ivan at the end, but settled for 11th place in 11:11, nearly a minute faster than his time last year at the invite. Austin Popplewell was our third and final medal winner with his 22nd place finish in 11:26. Matthew Angerame continues to be one of our most consistent runners and broke 12 minutes for the first time with his 52nd place finish in 11:57. Tyler Deutsch was the final scorer for the team and finished in 59th place with a time of 12:01. Jaydon Harvey was the lone seventh grader in the group and finished just behind Tyler in 60th with a time of 12:02. Colin Kachlic rounded out the top seven with a time of 12:07 in 69th place. All seven boys ran P.R.'s.
Open Girls
Sydney Peterson went out fast in the open race trying to prove something. She led for a good deal of the race, but couldn't hold on in the end and settled for third place with a time of 13:13. It was a gutsy race and no one can question Sydney's heart in that effort. Anna Hunter had a breakout race and finished just behind Sydney in 4th place with a time of 13:14. Shannon Burke would have had the breakout performance of the day had it not been for Anna's race. Shannon ran a 13:27 to finish in seventh place. Ava Glenn (9th, 13:28), Nuria Pugh (13th, 13:31), Natalee Penland (18th, 13:36), and Alexis Nelson (19th, 13:36) all finished with medals to ensure the entire top seven won top-25 medals. All seven girls ran P.R.'s. Other girls in the race who ran P.R.'s were Anna Titus (15:00), Bria Turner (15:52), Cassie Kingsmill (21:16), Emma Kokes (17:19), Graciela Costeira (20:59), Holly Quanstrom (16:29), Kara Mangione (17:13), Kylie Regas (16:07), Lauren Bell (15:39), Lindsey Burke (18:20), London Bennett (14:57), Loren Wood (17:43), Maggie Hunter (14:27), Paige Green (14:52), Paige Loos (15:43), Riley Russelburg (14:40), Sarah Pankow (14:42), Sydney Pierce (16:00), Sydney Shepherd (17:12), and Tayhler Srachta (14:13).
Open Boys
The boys open race may have been the most exciting race of the day with two Yorkville runners competing for the lead with two totally different strategies. Danny Harker ran a steady race and ended up winning with a time of 11:55.1. The .1 is necessary since Jack Brucher ran a great second half and led for a bit until the final stretch. Jack finished second to Danny with a time of 11:55.8. Danny broke 12 minutes for the first time and Jack set a lifetime P.R. with his race. Jackson Edwards ran a great race as well and stayed near the front pack to finish in seventh place with a 12:20. Nick Sinopoli (13th, 12:35), Josiah Gulbro (15th, 12:36), Logan Laughrey (18th, 12:42), and Evan May (23rd, 12:44) all finished in the team's top seven and all earned top-25 medals. Jack Stillmunkes just missed a medal in 26th place with a time of 12:49. All of them ran P.R.'s along with AJ Wynn (14:50), Andy Cox (16:24), Brian Perez (18:25), Brody Brant (16:56), Brody Ferko (13:06), Dylan Middendorf (16:29), Erik Mattson (15:25), Gus Bruck (13:29), Hayden Reyes (17:14), Hunter Reyes (13:07), James Stock (14:29), James Strohl (17:05), Jonathan Aguado (13:02), Julius Miene (15:16), Luke Hanson (12:55), Matt Page (15:29), Nathan Summers (13:40), Nicholas Clever (15:15), Owen Lindstrand (13:37), Riley Hayes (13:30), Travis Greep (16:37), Vince Bartlett (13:56), and Zach Mays (16:28).
