2015 Martino Invite Results
September 3, 2015
Our team's first invite was a great success on an incredibly hot day. We took home our first trophy of the year and a lot of runners ran personal records.
The girls started off the evening at five on the new course at Martino Junior High in New Lenox. Helena Kleronomos led the way with a masterful race showing incredible maturity for a seventh grader by pacing perfectly and finishing with a strong second half to take third place with a time of 12:57, breaking our team's two-year-old record at the meet. Jazmin Russell also finished in the top 15 placers with her P.R. of 13:14. Samantha Moreno, Nikki Vergara, and Hailey Simmons finished as a pack starting at 18th place with times of 13:44, 13:44, and 13:47, respectively, while Sara Klemm wasn't far behind with her 23rd place finish in 13:55. Hannah Wolf rounded out the team's top seven with her time of 14:39 in 37th place. The girls finished in second place, just one point behind team champion Homer.
The boys were looking to repeat their first place finish from the 2014 Martino Invite, and they did not disappoint. Pack running led the day with Brett Rhodes (11:40, 5th) and Tyler Jensen (11:41, 6th), Ivan Westcott (11:56, 12th) and Austin Popplewell (11:57, 13th), and Kyle Diverde (12:08, 16th) and Austin Hunter (12:11, 18th) all finishing in pairs with Mark Mattson as the seventh runner with a time of 12:36 in 30th place. Ivan Westcott's time of 11:56 set our team's meet record, and Ivan and Austin became the only seventh graders to break 12 minutes at New Lenox for our team. In fact, we had more runners break 12 this year (four) then we've had in all our previous years at New Lenox combined (three). The boys finished with a score of 52, which eclipsed second place Martino's mark of 69.
