2015 First Time Trial
August 6, 2015
The time trial we hold at the beginning of the season serves a few purposes. One purpose is to gauge the fitness of our runners to determine the best group to place them in to start the season. We can also use the first time trial to compare times with previous years and give us an idea of how our team is doing compared to previous years. The most important reason we have a time trial to start the year, though, is so runners can earn their uniforms.
We feel that each runner's uniform should mean something to them, which is why runners on the YMS cross country team must earn their uniform by running two miles in a race without walking. This is a big accomplishment, and we hold two time trials over the first few weeks so everyone has a chance to earn their uniform before the first meet. The list of runners who earned their uniforms is below. Almost everyone was able to earn their uniform on the first try, but those who didn't earn it will have another chance in a few weeks. Congratulations to the runners who earned their uniforms!
In terms of times, the boys had their fastest time trial ever with eight breaking 14 minutes for the two-mile race (Austin Hunter, Austin Popplewell, Brett Rhodes, Cade Grimaldi, Ernie Rowoldt, Jackson Edwards, Mark Mattson, and Tyler Jensen). The list of all the boys who ever broke 14 minutes in the time trial can be seen here. Almost every runner on that list ended up running at State for our team so it is a pretty exclusive list to be on. Unfortunately, we can only have seven runners run at State for us so someone who ran under 14 minutes this year will be on the short end of the stick when it comes to choosing our State runners. That is one of the few disadvantages of having a great team. Each of these eight runners could be the top runner on a lot of other teams in the state.
On the girl's side, we had three girls break 15 minutes (Helena Kleronomos, Jazmin Russell, and Samantha Moreno). This is one runner fewer than two years ago, but three fewer than last year. That isn't as bad as it sounds since the last two years the girls have finished fourth in the State, so this year's team has a lot to live up to.
