Heading to State

For the fifth year in a row the Yorkville Middle School girls are heading down to the IESA State Cross Country Championships and the boys will be joining them for the fourth time in the past five years. Both teams earned second place in what many consider to be the most difficult sectional in the state with consistent state qualifiers such as Batavia, Shorewood Troy, and Minooka as well as up-and-coming teams such as Kaneland and Sycamore. Yorkville and Batavia are teams that are incredibly familiar with each other as they had matched up four times before the sectional race this past Saturday, but Saturday's race was the closest yet between the two conference foes.
The girls race was led by a sea of red with Batavia and Yorkville runners taking up all but three of the top ten places. Olivia Borowiak battled in the front with Batavia's Mia Gianfrancesco as both runners took the race out to a fast pace to leave the rest of the pack. Gianfrancesco got the best of Olivia in the dash to the finish, but Olivia placed second with a time of 11:54 over the two-mile course at Yorkville High School. Colleen O'Connor earned All-Sectional honors as the next finisher for Yorkville in seventh place with a time of 12:19. Emily Eberhart fought through a painful second mile and still ended up with an All-Sectional finish in ninth place with a time of 12:27. Victoria Crawford (12th, 12:31) and Dani Evans (13th, 12:31) had strong races to finish ahead of Batavia's fifth runner. It wasn't enough, though, as Batavia won with a score of 34 to Yorkville's 43. Kaneland's girls team earned the last state-qualifying spot with 68 points. Jazmin Russell (25th, 13:07) and Madison Grandys (30th, 13:14) ran personal records to finish out Yorkville's top seven. The girls will be running at Maxwell Park in Normal this Saturday at 12:30pm in an attempt to earn their first-ever state trophy.
The boys race was so close that the results had to be confirmed via video. Batavia and Yorkville did not dominate the top ten like they did in the girls race, but every Yorkville and Batavia runner finished by the time the 23rd runner passed the two-mile mark indicating both teams have strong packs. Alex Loos of Yorkville was the first finisher for either team, coming in sixth place with a time of 11:01. Jake Carlson also finished with All-Sectional honors in tenth place in a time of 11:17. Austin Hunter wasn't far behind in 11th with a time of 11:19. Brett Rhodes (17th, 11:34) and Hunter Benesh (21st, 11:38) finished the scoring for the Foxes. Yorkville was originally announced the winner by a scant two points, but after a mistake was caught on video Batavia ended up winning with 63 points to Yorkville's 65 points. Shorewood Troy was the third state-qualifying team with a score of 111. Ben Tholen (22nd, 11:39) and Cole Bruck (23rd, 11:41) finished right with Hunter as the last two runners on the team. The boys will be running at Maxwell Park on Saturday at 1:15pm with aspirations of a state trophy. Good luck to both teams this Saturday.

I can't find the order form. Madison said it was online but I'm not seeing it. She wants either a shirt or sweatshirt in adult medium with her name on it. How much do each cost and how do I order? Thanks

Correct, we will use a school check or some other method to pay for everything all at once. We usually go off the size that was on the cross country registration form, but if you want something different let us know. There is only one design available for preorders.

Yes, thank you. I did see that written on the form. However, we can pay the school (made payable to YMS) and then, the school will submit the money with a school check, correct? Also, is the design chosen by the school and do we need to give you a size on the free t-shirts? Thanks. Sorry for so many questions.

Checks should be made out to Yorkville Middle School. We can't use personal checks for a pre-order.

For state sweatshirt orders, do we place the order online noting the coach and school and then give the coach the money before Wed?

Actually, a Batavia runner was totally missing from the results. I noticed they only had six finishers last night so I double-checked with their coach and she confirmed that a runner was missing. The video showed the runner finished in 14th place.
