2014 Time Trial Results

August 5, 2014

We hold a time trial at the beginning of the season for a few reasons. The first reason is to gauge the fitness levels of our runners to see which group they should be running with. Another reason has to do with our team uniforms. We feel that each runner's uniform should mean something to them, which is why runners on the YMS cross country team must earn their uniform by running two miles in a race without walking. This is a big accomplishment, and we hold two time trials over the first few weeks so everyone has a chance to earn their uniform before the first meet.

The list of runners who earned their uniforms is below. Almost everyone was able to earn their uniform on the first try, but those who didn't earn it will have another chance in a few weeks. Congratulations to the runners who earned their uniforms!

Our first time trial was a great success, time-wise as well. It was the fastest start-of-the-season time trial we have ever had. Seven boys were under 14:00 for the two-mile race (Alex Loos, Austin Hunter, Ben Tholen, Brett Rhodes, Bryan Corrigan, Mark Mattson, and Zack Nauman), which is more than we've ever had. You can check out the list of all boys under 14:00 in the time trial here. Note the dates on those results. Most of them are during our second time trial of the summer in late August. Only 16 runners total ran under 14:00 for the boys before this season. Last season saw six boys break 14:00 which means the last two seasons saw 13 out of the 16 boys who were under 14:00. In addition, Alex Loos broke the eighth-grade boys time trial record with a time of 11:49 and became the first runner in Yorkville history to break 12 minutes in the time trial.

On the girl's side, seven girls ran under 15:00 (Colleen O'Connor, Dani Evans, Emily Eberhart, Hannah Wolf, Madison Grandys, Olivia Borowiak, and Victoria Crawford). As you can see here, in Yorkville history, only 17 girls have done that and four of those girls were from last year meaning 11 out of the 17 girls under 15:00 were from the last two years. Olivia Borowiak also became the first girl to break 12 minutes this early in the season. As you can see on our girls two-mile leaderboard she ran the sixth fastest time in YMS history...on the second day of practice. Colleen O'Connor shouldn't be ignored, though. Coming off running a triathlon over the weekend she ran a very respectable 12:48, which would have beaten our eighth grade girls record if Olivia hadn't beaten it first.
