I didn't really answer the rest of your question. Timing your laps is incredibly helpful, but you can't go from running a 5:30 mile to running a 4:00 mile. There are limits to what you can do. Setting a reasonable goal is the first step. A top 8th grader can run under a 5-minute mile so that may be a reasonable goal to try to achieve for next track season.

Of course that's practical. Pacing is an integral part of distance running and it's much easier to do in track than in cross country since you have a controlled distance to run. I wouldn't necessarily time each 100, though, since that can get to be a bit much. Timing each 200 would be fine, though.

Miller, is it practical to run a paced race, as in timeing your 100's in your head and keeping that pace, because that's what I told derryan to do at sectionals and for all intents and purposes it worked. But what I'm talking about is not just doing 18 second 100's to make state time, I'm talking training yourself to do 15 second 100's and demolish state records, (ie a 4 min flat mile or a 2 min flat 800), because if not just me but anyone on the team managed to do somehing like that they would dominate their race and win state, and if it is practical, could it be done in one summer?

Just saying I think you got the relays mixed-up:)) High school has a 4x800 and we ran the 4x400. If we could run the 4x800 in 4 minutes that would be olympic timing:)))))))))))))
