Yorkville State Champs
November 5, 2011
It was a great day for Yorkville down at the IHSA State Cross Country Finals in Peoria. The boys team finished in 6th place, which was the team's best finish since 1987 and their best-ever finish since the team moved to the 2A level. The boys were led by Eric Baker in 33rd place with a 3-mile time of 15:28. Eric was followed by Zak Arcara in 38th with 15:34, Nick Harrison in 45th with 15:39, Luke Hoffert in 83rd with 16:03, Chris Kellogg in 91st with 16:08, Justin Vacha in 107th with 16:16, and Jake Hoffert in 112th with 16:18. The guys should be strong again next year as Chris is the only senior from the group. Chris' team finished in the top 10 at state every year of his running career at Yorkville so he should be proud of his accomplishments.
The girls ran a dominating race to win Yorkville's first state championship in cross country by an outstanding 32 points. Cross country became the first girls sport in Yorkville history to win a state championship and the first fall sport, boys or girls, to come home state champs. The girls were led by three All-State runners in Ali Hester, Casey Kramer, and Leena Palmer. Ali finished in 6th with a time of 17:28, Casey in 8th with a time of 17:29, and Leena in 10th with a time of 17:34. They were followed by Esther Bell in 29th with 18:11, Bri Stuepfert in 39th with 18:22, Kelsey Leedy in 82nd with 18:55, and Ashley Leonetti 145th with 19:51. Ali, Leena, and Ashley will graduate as the best group of senior cross country runners in Yorkville history. Congratulations to the boys and girls for a fantastic season!
