Yorkville Middle School Cross Country

Ava Glenn is the YMS IESA Scholar Attitude Nominee

January 17, 2018

The IESA Scholar Attitude Award is meant to recognize outstanding student-athletes who participate in an IESA sport such as cross country. The award was started in 1999 and Yorkville has been participating since 2011. IESA Executive Director Steve Endsley said this about the award:

The students selected for our Scholar Attitude Award represent the finest junior high school students in the state of Illinois. The students have demonstrated their abilities in the classroom, on the playing fields, and in their communities. It is refreshing to see that the youth of Illinois are preparing for their high school careers and beyond. These students will be the leaders of tomorrow.

Ava Glenn: Yorkville Middle School's 2018 IESA Scholar Attitude NomineeSince 2011, Yorkville's nominee for the award has won the division award four times. Three out of those four times the winner was a cross country runner. Sarah Megazzini won in 2011, Julia Megazzini won in 2013, and Sam Moreno won in 2016. In addition, Yorkville's nominee has been a cross country runner seven out of eight times, including this year's nominee Ava Glenn.

Ava is  a two-year cross country athlete who also plays travel soccer in the fall and participated in basketball and track at YMS. Ava is one of the hardest workers we've EVER had on the cross country team. She not only works her hardest  during cross country, but she then goes to soccer practice or a game 3-4 days per week. Ava never complains, and the coaches often had to talk to her a lot to make sure we weren't pushing herself too hard. She was disappointed in seventh grade when she wasn't chosen to run on our postseason roster (she was an alternate), but she came back strong this season and ran on a State team that was just a few points away from a trophy.

Shout-outs to Justin Jakstys and Renee Niles who also received a nomination this year to be Yorkville's IESA Scholar Attitude nominee, but congrats to Ava for earning the YMS nomination. The winners of the award will be announced in the spring, and, if Ava is among the winner, she will be honored at a ceremony in Bloomington in May. Congrats, Ava!
