2017 State: Hungry For Next Season

While the boys and the girls were both short of their team goals for the 2017 season, we should never be sorry for setting the bar high. The boys may have been short of their goal of finishing in the top two at State, but the boys have made State every year since 2012 and are one of only five teams to do that. Making State is an incredible accomplishment even if it was not our ultimate goal.
For the girls, they came only nine points short of their goal of earning a trophy at State. While that might hurt, it should just make us hungrier for next season. The eighth graders will be joining a team at the high school that is currently ranked 21st in the country. We also had the most seventh graders on the girls team in a while so that group has a chance to come back next year and finish what they started.
Girls Race

The girls had a slow start, but ran strategically and moved up as the race went on. Alex started the race outside the top 25, but by the time she was at the 3/4 mile mark she was in All-State range and moving up. Alex ran a 5:49 first mile (which is almost State qualifying time for the mile in track) and was in 14th place heading into the final straightaway. Alex outkicked Dunlap, Minooka, and Hergert (all trophy winning teams) to secure an 11th place finish. Alex had the best finish at State for a Yorkville seventh grader and her time of 11:46 is the fastest time ever run by a Yorkville seventh grade girl as well as the sixth-fastest P.R. for any Yorkville girl.
Sydney Peterson finished her middle school grade career strong. Sydney eclipsed her seventh grade time at State by nine seconds to finish with a time of 12:12 in 40th place. Sydney and Alex were the only two Yorkville girls to run under six minutes for the first mile. Sydney's season P.R. of 11:53 stands as the ninth fastest P.R. ever by a Yorkville girl.
Anna Hunter continued her strong stretch of races, running a 6:06 first mile to finish the race in 12:29 in 69th place. Anna finishes her middle school career with a P.R. of 12:28, which is 23rd all-time for Yorkville girls.
Alexis Wasserberg and Katlyn Schraeder were the team's fourth and fifth runners and ran together for most of the race right behind Anna. Alexis had the better first mile with a time of 6:04, but Katlyn closed the gap during the second mile. Alexis ultimately finished ahead of Katlyn with a time of 12:33 in 81st place, but Katlyn's 12:35 in 83rd place was one of only two P.R.'s set at State. Alexis finished her season with the eighth fastest P.R. for a Yorkville seventh grader while Katlyn finished with the 13th fastest P.R. for a seventh grade girl.
Brooke O'Carroll and Ava Glenn rounded out the girls State team. The two eighth graders finished in 138th place and 164th place, respectively, with times of 13:00 and 13:11. Brooke ran a gutsy first mile which represented the third fastest first mile on the team, but couldn't hold on for the second mile. Brooke and Ava's P.R.'s currently stand as the 16th and 20th fastest P.R.'s for any Yorkville girl.

The boys had beaten three of the top four teams in the State race during the season, and lost to first place Herget by only one point at the Tiger Trails Invite. That made their 13th place finish a bit of mystery, but it shouldn't take away from the fact that the team made State for the sixth year in a row. The only other 3A teams to do that are Chatham Glenwood, New Lenox Martino, Rotolo, and Woodridge Jefferson.
Jack Stillmunkes and Brody Ferko once again led the team at State. They have been our most consistent runners all season, and while they finished a bit short of All-State they finish their middle school cross country careers with the sixth and ninth fastest P.R.'s in team history. They finished in 31st and 32nd place at State with a time of 11:07. Jack also currently holds our team record for the Parkside Invite at 10:48.
The pack was fairly far back from Jack and Brody, but was led by Nathan Summers who finished in 98th place with a time of 11:35. Owen Lindstrand was next in 126th place in 11:45 and Nick Sinopoli finished the scoring for the team in 151st place in 11:55. Josiah Gulbro (154th, 11:56) and Jaydon Harvey (196th, 12:16) were the team's sixth and seventh runners.
