Parkside 2017 Results

Our boys team has never won the Parkside Invite in the three years we have participated in it...until this year. The girls have won a trophy at Parkside every year over the past three years including a third place trophy this year. While we didn't have as many individual medals in the varsity races this year as we had last year, this year's performances were arguably more dominant.
Varsity Girls
Sydney Peterson ran a steady race from beginning to end. Last year she ran in the open race and finished in third place with a time of 13:13 while trying to win as a front-runner. This year Sydney's steady pace kept her on track to break 12 minutes for the first time and also break our 8th grade girls record at the Parkside Invite with her time of 11:53. Sydney finished in 7th place. Alex Stewart ran a conservative first half of the race and then a fast second half to nearly catch Sydney. Alex's time of 11:54 in 8th place also broke a team record. Alex is only the second 7th grade girl to break 12 minutes in team history, and her 11:54 time is the second-fastest P.R. for a 7th grade girl in team history with over a month still to go. Alexis Wasserberg, a transfer from Herget in Aurora, has been consistently improving her position on the team and finished one place away from a medal in 26th with a time of 12:20. Alexis' time isn't anything to scoff at as it puts her P.R. in the top ten for 7th grade girls in team history. Last year Brooke O'Carroll ran on the victorious varsity team at Parkside and finished with a time of 13:01 in 43rd place. This year, Brooke improved her time to 12:44, but finished in 53rd place, which reflected the tougher competition this year. Brooke was followed closely by 7th grader Katlyn Schraeder who finished in 12:47 for 57th place. Katlyn, Alex, and Alexis breaking 13 minutes is a big deal. Only one 7th grade girl has done that in our team history and that was Helena Kleronomos who was an all-state track and cross country runner in middle school and is now running varsity as a freshman for the high school. The top five runners on the team finish the scoring for the team so the girls ended up with a total of 151 points. That placed the girls third behind Chatham Glenwood (124 points) and Tolono Unity (83 points). Tolono is a 2A school so we won't see them at State, but Chatham is definitely a team to contend with when we return to Parkside for State in just over a month. Our last two runners in the varsity race were Ava Glenn and Makenna Edwards, who ran 13:05 and 13:18 and finished in 80th and 99th place, respectively. All seven girls ran P.R.'s in the varsity race.
Varsity Boys
The boys have a lofty goal of finishing in the top two at State this season, and they started off on the right foot with their first ever victory at the Parkside Invite. Jack Stillmunkes and Brody Ferko worked as a team the entire race and finished in 5th and 7th with times of 10:48 and 10:50. Only one runner in school history has broken 11 minutes in September and that runner, Ivan Westcott, didn't break 11 until the Tiger Trails Invite at the end of September. Last year, Jack and Brody were both in the open race at Parkside. Jack finished in 26th place with a time of 12:49 and Brody finished in 36th place with a time of 13:06. Following Jack and Brody were Owen Lindstrand and Nathan Summers in 40th and 41st place with times of 11:30 and 11:31, respectively. Nathan had a solid, steady race from beginning to end, but Owen had an incredible finishing kick that started before the turn on the final stretch. Owen passed a lot of runners during his kick and helped secure a victory for the team. At Parkside last season, Owen finished in 76th place with a time of 13:37 and Nathan was close behind with a time of 13:40 in 80th place. Only eight runners in team history have been at 11:30 this early in the season and half of them were all-state cross country runners by the end of the season. Nick Sinopoli was close to that 11:30 mark as well with his 11:34 finish in 52nd place to finish the team's scoring. Last year in the open race, Nick 12:35 to finish in 13th place. Josiah Gulbro and Jaydon Harvey were the 6th and 7th runners for the team in 63rd and 99th place with times of 11:41 and 11:59. The boys beat second place Troy by a score of 145 to 192. All seven boys ran P.R.'s.
Open Girls
Anna Hunter hung with the ultimate winner of the open for most of the race. Anna ended up finishing in 2nd with a time of 12:50. Her sister Maggie wasn't far behind with a time of 13:03 in 4th place. Nuria Pugh ran with Maggie for most of the race and also ended up earning a medal with a 6th-place finish in 13:08. Emma Jasutis was the only 7th grade girl to medal in the open race and finished in 15th place with a time of 13:21. Renee Niles was the team's final medal winner with a 19th-place finish in 13:26. There was no team scoring in the open race, but Julia Hupp (27th, 13:42) and Courtney Morse (30th, 13:47) were the 6th and 7th runners for the team. All of the top 7 girls ran P.R.'s. Other runners who ran P.R's in the open were Allyson Stancel (15:32), Brianne Kuczkowski (16:22), Evelyn Wrona (15:39), Graciela Costeira (18:26), Juliza Jimenez (17:26), Katie Melzer (15:22), Kylie Regas (14:12), Lillian DuMez (14:05), Lindsey Burke (18:23), Sydney Shepherd (15:38), Tatum Whisenant (14:25), and Wrigley Glenn (14:41).
Open Boys
Gus Bruck ran a great race to finish in 2nd place with a time of 11:54. That time would have won the open race the past two years. Jonathan Aguado and Nicholas Clever weren't far behind in 4th and 5th place with times of 11:55 and 11:59. Bryce Ward (12th, 12:12) and Nick Childs (17th, 12:19) also finished in the top 25 to earn medals. Justin Jakstys (26th, 12:32) and Zach Russo (28th, 12:33) were the 6th and 7th runners for the team. All of the top 7 boys ran P.R.'s. Other P.R.'s in the race were run by Aaron Wynn (13:19), Ben Leslie (14:07), Ben Whaley (14:36), Brian Perez (15:26), Brody Brant (14:37), Brycen Clements (14:31), Dillan Black (14:05), Dylan Johnson (15:24), Dylan Middendorf (15:04), Erik Mattson (13:28), Hayden Reyes (13:02), Jason King (14:40), Jimmy Green (13:47), Josh Pugh (13:01), Matt Page (13:22), Mitchell McCarty (13:16), Paul Emmert (13:25), Trey Kingsberry (18:07), and Tyler Aters (12:52).
