Sara Klemm is Yorkville's Scholar Attitude Nominee
February 14, 2017
The IESA Scholar Attitude Award is meant to recognize outstanding student-athletes who participate in an IESA sport such as cross country. The award was started in 1999 and Yorkville has been participating since 2011. IESA Executive Director Steve Endsley said this about the award:
The students selected for our Scholar Attitude Award represent the finest junior high school students in the state of Illinois. The students have demonstrated their abilities in the classroom, on the playing fields, and in their communities. It is refreshing to see that the youth of Illinois are preparing for their high school careers and beyond. These students will be the leaders of tomorrow.
Since 2011, Yorkville's nominee for the award has won the division award four times. Three out of those four times the winner was a cross country runner. Sarah Megazzini won in 2011, Julia Megazzini won in 2013, and Sam Moreno won in 2016. In addition, Yorkville's nominee has been a cross country runner six out of seven times, including this year's nominee Sara Klemm.
Sara Klemm served as a captain on the cross country team for both of her years at YMS. She was also the winner of this year's end-of-the-year Sportsmanship Award. Sara is the type of runner who does what is expected of her even when she isn't asked. She is always celebrating the accomplishments of her teammates and was a go-to person whenever we needed someone to announce a "Celebration" at the beginning of practice. As one of the hardest workers on the team she was probably a mentor for a majority of the 7th grade girls on our team.
Sara was an All-State runner this season, but she always treated her opponents with respect. We even had numerous coaches from other teams during the season noting Sara's sportsmanship. We could have given her our weekly Sportsmanship Award every week because of this.
Shout-out to Tyler Deutsch who also received a nomination this year from his basketball coach, but congrats to Sara for earning the YMS nomination. The winners of the award will be announced in the spring, and, if Sara is among the winner, she will be honored at a ceremony in Bloomington in May. Congrats, Sara!
