Fox Trot Results
Yorkville Middle School cross country has hosted the Fox Trot Invite since 2012, but has never won the overall award at the competitive meet. That changed this year as the team came home with seven trophies including the overall meet award and two conference championship trophies. With thunderstorms in the forecast, the races had to be moved up and combined to avoid cancelling the later races and Yorkville’s runners showed incredible mental toughness by not allowing the changes to affect their races.
The junior varsity girls were without top runners Sydney Peterson and Brooke O’Carroll, who ran in the varsity race, but the girls still came away with a second-place finish by scoring 48 points to Batavia’s 29 points. Ava Glenn and Shannon Burke led the way with a 1-2 finish in the race with times of 12:24 and 12:25 for the two-mile course. Anna Hunter was the third runner for the team and finished in 12th place with a time of 13:00 to earn a top-15 medal. Maggie Hunter (16th, 13:12) and Riley Russelburg (17th, 13:18) were the final scorers for the team while Nuria Pugh (20th, 13:29) and Lily DuMez (22nd, 13:38) completed the team’s top seven.
The junior varsity boys also finished second to Batavia. The Yorkville boys scored 42 points to Rotolo's 21 points. Jaydon Harvey finished in 2nd place with a time of 11:26 and became only the sixth runner in Yorkville history to break 11:30 for two miles. He was followed closely by Jack Stillmunkes (6th, 11:37) and Jonathan Aguado (7th, 11:40). Owen Lindstrand (13th, 11:53) and Nick Sinopoli (14th, 11:54) ended the team’s scoring and also came away with individual medals. The team’s 6th and 7th runners were Nathan Summers in 16th place and Brody Ferko in 21st place with times of 11:59 and 12:13, respectively.
The varsity girls had lost to Batavia at the Fox Trot Invite every year since Batavia joined the meet in 2013. Batavia had two state championships and a runner-up finish at State during that time so it was definitely not a reflection on Yorkville’s runners. The varsity girls flipped the script against the defending state championships, however, and came away with a 34-51 victory against the Bulldogs from Batavia. They also took home Yorkville’s first conference championship since the team joined the Fox River Prairie Conference in 2014. Helena Kleronomos led the way with a blazing time of 10:59 to become 12th runner of any gender to break 11 minutes for a two miles race for Yorkville. Helena also set the course record for an 8th grader at the Fox Trot Invite. All that was only good enough for 2nd place, though, as Batavia’s superb 7th grader Katrina Schlenker took home the individual victory in 10:49. Hailey Simmons and Sara Klemm both broke 11:30 for the first time with their times of 11:26 and 11:29 in 4th and 5th place. Helena, Hailey, and Sara are the only girls in Yorkville Middle School history to break 11:30 over two miles, and Helena has done it twice now. Nikki Verara (12th, 12:07), Jinnaea Richardson (13th, 12:12), Sydney Peterson (14th, 12:12), and Brooke O’Carroll (15th, 12:18) all finished with medals in a tight pack and ensure all top seven runners earned a medal.
The varsity boys took home a victory as well as a conference championship in addition to the girls. Ivan Westcott led the way with a dominating individual victory in 10:26, which is the fastest time run in YMS history. Cade Grimaldi (3rd, 10:37), Austin Popplewell (6th, 10:46), and Matthew Angerame (11th, 10:59) broke 11 minutes along with Ivan. Only 11 boys have ever broken 11 minutes for YMS and most have been all-state athletes. Danny Harker almost joined the group with his 14th-place finish in 11:00. Colin Kachlic (22nd, 11:10) and Logan Laughrey (35th, 11:25) rounded out the top seven for the team as they completed a dominating 35-79 victory over Jefferson Junior High from Woodbridge.
The open races saw Natalee Penland take home an individual victory with a time of 12:49. Other runners who finished with top-10 medals in the open races were Isabella Franz (2nd, 12:56), Julia Green (6th, 13:39), London Bennett (9th, 13:52), and Delaney Fisher (10th, 13:53) in the girls race and Tyler Deutsch (2nd, 11:40), Evan May (4th, 11:55), Luke Hanson (7th, 12:06), and Hunter Reyes (8th, 12:07) in the boys race. In addition, Bristol Bay Elementary’s Sophia Marasco finished 8th in 13:44 to earn a medal. The Yorkville elementary cross country program participated in the open races and Yorkville Intermediate came away with the team victory for both the boys and girls.
